As technology advances, participation and opportunity in online spaces becomes less equal, creating a digital divide – the gap between those who do and don’t have reliable, affordable access and skills to engage online. Impacts quality of life. This impacts quality of life for many vulnerable groups, including those in rural areas and the elderly.
Why digital literacy?
Having access to technology and a stable internet connection is not enough, users must be able to think critically and navigate safely across apps, websites, and devices. A lack of digital literacy skills creates a digital divide and keeps people from participation and interaction in online spaces, and can not only be frustrating or inconvenient, it could be a safety risk.
Digital literacy skills are not just a luxury or a privelage, they are are vital to get ahead and succeed, impacting everything from job opportunities to finances, and personal security. These skills help people find trustworthy information, communicate respectfully online, and protect their privacy.
